Abstract

Biodegradable or bioplastic packaging in general can be defined as packaging that can be naturally recycled and destroyed by microorganisms into short-chain polymers. One of the basic ingredients that can be used to make biodegradable packaging is Kappa-carrageenan. The aim of this research is to develop a biodegradable thermoplastic packaging made from kappa-carrageenan that has good thermoplastic characteristics even closer to conventional plastics. The manufacture of this packaging is divided into 2 stages, namely determining the best heating time and continuing with determining the right type and concentration of plasticizer. The best packaging results obtained from heating 30 minutes with a film thickness of 0.051 mm, tensile strength of 60,16 N / mm2, elongation of 6,81 % and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 357.63 g/m2/day. Followed by determining the type and concentration of plasticizer with the best results is to use a sorbitol plasticizer with a concentration of 35% (w/w) which produces a film with a thickness of 0.064 mm, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) 63.698 g/m2/day, tensile strength 61.12 N/mm2, elongation 15.33%, Water activity (aw) 0.758, transparency 0.829 and heatsealability 4.193 N /mm2.
